today’s word: plangent

plangent: a loud or deep sound that expresses sadness; reverberating; melancholy; having an expressive and plaintive quality; beating one’s chest in grief or howling a lament; dirge-like.

What we owe each other

No, we don’t leave you alone to care for your dead.
The vacated space where the body lies immobile
makes you feel wild, as plangent beats swell
and fill the room with gloom.  Jesus was wrong
to say, Let the dead bury their dead.

You deserve support in this endeavor. Remains
unravel, fragments of undone tasks swallow
what meager breath we sustain.  World continues
without us, or perhaps even the world dies,
this is not for us to know. So be at peace with life;
and be at peace with death. We don’t leave you
alone to care for your dead.
